How to identify Koi....

Just what Koi is that?!?

Koi can be difficult to identify. Sometimes it's downright impossible!

Koi Identification and the types of Koi explained...

The vast majority of Koi swimming in ponds are sadly not easily classified into one of the top 14 Koi varieties at all - they are simply pond fish and hence fall into category 15 - a catch all variety called Kawarimono.

There are thus 15 officially recognised Koi varieties that are entered into competitions and the like, with Koi that don't fall into any of the previous 14 classifications being classified into Kawarimono. Stands to reason that most Koi end up here, although this is not to say that the quality of the fish is in any way inferior. It is purely the system of classification that determines what makes a variety of Koi one or another.

Once classified as one variety or another, differing standards are used to judge the quality of the Koi. There are common standards that are applied to all Koi, no matter their variety. However each variety has its own unique requirements that become applicable, mainly with regard to pattern and colour markings on the Koi.

However before we get ahead of ourselves and rush off to sign up to become Koi judges, the soon to be famous Paul Botha has drawn up a logical chart to help you understand what is what when it comes to Koi. You can see where your Koi fits in and you can at a glance see the different varieties - it in fact may even inspire you to add to your collection...

It is in PDF format and you can download it by clicking this link: Koi Varieties and Identification made easy by Paul Botha.
